Every 2,500 Total Levels there is a level gate: 9,999, 12,499, 14,999, 17,499 and so on, with no end. At a gate your EXP holds at the edge of leveling until you have enough Ascension Points (AP) (500 AP at the first three gates, 1,000 AP from 17,499 on; up to half of it can be earned in the 249 levels before the gate); the next level-up breaks through, AP goes back to 0 and you get a permanent +1% Rare Drop Rate per gate cleared. Nothing is lost while you wait.
| Held at | Unlocks | Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Total Level 9,999 | Total Level 10,000 | 500 AP |
| Total Level 12,499 | Total Level 12,500 | 500 AP |
| Total Level 14,999 | Total Level 15,000 | 500 AP |
| Total Level 17,499 | Total Level 17,500 | 1,000 AP |
| ... every 2,500 levels after that | ||
AP comes from voting, Pink Zakum, @boss, Trials, the Dice Board, @craft, Silver/Gold Boxes, fishing and time online. It counts at a gate, and up to half of it from 249 levels before the gate. See Ascension Tiers for every source and daily maximum, and type @ascension (or @levelcap / @levelprogress) in-game to see your progress.
No more @bonus requirements and no level-based @bonus cap: every level can reach the 99,999% maximum (125,000% with a DP rate buff). Wearing a Firestarter Ring inside a burning @instance raises the EXP maximum to 110,000% (only when no DP rate buff is active - the DP buff wins).
Levels 1-200 use the standard MapleStory EXP table. One exception: levels 30-120 cost half the normal amount of EXP to level up - a permanent discount across that whole 90-level stretch.
Total Level 200 and up switches to a formula-based curve instead of a fixed table (it has to - the numbers involved get far too large for a lookup table long before you reach the level range the gates above talk about). On top of that base formula, a difficulty multiplier scales how much extra EXP each range demands:
| Total Level Range | EXP Multiplier | Relative Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| 200 - 249 | 100% | Base curve |
| 250 - 999 | 50% | Discounted |
| 1,000 - 2,000 | 80% | Discounted |
| 2,001 - 4,999 | 100% | Base curve |
| 5,000 - 6,000 | 250% | 2.5x harder |
| 6,001 - 8,500 | 1,000% | 10x harder |
| 8,501 - 9,999 | 2,000% | 20x harder (a wall right before 10,000) |
| 10,000 - 25,000 | 2,500% | 25x harder |
| 25,001 - 45,000 | 4,000% | 40x harder |
| 45,001 - 50,000 | 10,000% | 100x harder |
| 50,001 - 59,000 | 15,000% | 150x harder |
| 59,001+ | 25,000% | 250x harder |
